Any help with a Build?

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if anyone knew how to build a good budget PC for under $600.

All I need bought is the tower and the Operating System. No monitor/mouse/keyboard

I was hoping to make it run BF3 on ultra at a decent fps.

I've tried many builds on newegg and tigerdirect but always got just over my budget. (I live in Canada btw)

Any help would be appreciated

Go to best buy, buy s shitty graphics card and a nice one, put the nice one in your computer and the shitty one in the nice ones box, then return it. Instant savings

I would recommend saving for a while if you really have to have the game running at Ultra settings. If you really can't wait, you can get some fairly reasonable motherboard bundles at Amazon and use one of them for the basis of your rig, but I think you may be dissappointed with the results.

600 =/= ultra settings on BF3 unfortunately, and if it did you're probably buying used parts which might not last as long or you're using AMD, and AMD is kinda shitty for CPU's. 800 is roughly the sweet spot these days with PC building. Makes it last for 4-5 years and more if you're ok with running it on Medium/High at 30fps (still looks good, and is playable)

Start with the falcon guide.

Ok maybe I was being a little too giving with BF3 on ultra :P. I'd like to have the best bang for my buck is basically what I'm saying. I'm not much a hardcore gamer but I'd like to run any game that's out on the market (preferably on recommended settings[default]) well and when it's time to upgrade I can.

For 600 you're getting a good build for the most part. The CPU is AMD, but it isn't a bulldozer so thats not too bad. The 560ti is a more than capable card as is the 6870 if you're aiming for the lower end 600. Just if it was me I'd save that extra 200 because then you're getting the fantastic i5 range and Ati's brilliant 7850

Well I could sell a couple things that could add to a budget of < $800. But is it really worth the save for just a core gamer?

Absolutely. The improvements at those tiers are vast. The difference between AMD's CPU and the i5 you'd be getting would be massive. Same goes for the gfx cards

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/549?vs=547

While the 560ti is better for BF3, thats an old benchmark and drivers may be better now, pushign the scales in the 7850's favour. not to mention the 7850 is better than the 560ti for most of those games listed

Just pirate the OS but theres a few things that stick out at me.

The ram is REALLY cheap. I can tell just by looking at it. Try to get Corsair or the higher end G-Skill stuff. Value ram is good when you're doing basic things but for things like gaming it can be quite poor. I generally recommend something like XMS-3 because I've had hands on with it and it's great ram.

I can't comment on the CPU because I've never tried it but for 15 bucks more you get a steep incline in performance if you buy the i3 2100. http://www.tomshardw...ark,3136-2.html

Remember, If you buy this CPU you need to change the motherboard too.

I don't understand the choice of Powercolor? Is it cheaper or s/t? Never heard of that brand and dont have choice to check right now.

Oh and finally general rule of thumb is don't use Power Supplies that come bundled with cases. They generally suffer from power sag quite badly and are just overall shitty build quality. That one might be good but right now I don't have time to check.

A little info about the falcon guide. It's generally made with best bang for buck in mind it isn't just by Falcon, but many users who criticise the parts and replace with better. It's updated reguarly and is pretty useful.

Where's this falcon build you speak of? I was considering an i3 2100 build but considering price I think AMD is good enough for me. The power supply/Case was a combo deal (seperate companies). Anyways I actually made a new build which IMO is much better. Good RAM and good video card I'll post it I guess. I'm not too fond of pirating an OS :/ never tried it.

I really wouldn't advise going for an FX processor, they are cheap because they are garbage. If you really must go AMD, you could get a Phenom II X6 in the same price range and though older, it is far superior.

Good to get a second opinion. I thought bulldozer sucked dick but didn't want to say that incase drivers or s/t had stopped them blowing ass so much.

It's far superior for just about everything :L, Bulldozer really was a flop. the i5 2500K (four cores) shat all over the 8 core Bulldozers.

Well I did a few more builds, and this is the one I may just have to get. I've been to my local computer shops and got a few recommended items on this list. Tell me what you guys think.

AMD FX-4100 (yeah I know you guys avoid this cpu but it works for the budget)

ASUS M5A97 Motherboard

MSI Cyclone 6850 (reason I'm going with this is it's at a really great deal for 129.99/it's OC/and reviews says its really quiet)

G. Skill 8GB 1600

SILVERSTONE Strider Essential series ST60F-ES 600W Power Supply

HAF 912 Computer Case

Caviar Blue 500GB 7200rpm.

The thing with the FX series is that it pales in comparison to some of the 4 core intel CPU's, but its capable of Hyper threading. The downside is not that much consumer software uses it yet (games don't, if you move onto video editing some of the higher end stuff might use it) but by the time software uses it. AMD and Intel will have better processors out.

If you're going for silence, the HAF series cases are kinda counter intuitive. They're "FANS EVERYWHERE" cases and are very loud, they're also ugly but I think that's just my opinion. Oh and if you search around you can find a Caviar blue 1tb for a couple of pounds more than the 500gb model.

Thanks for the info. Noise doesn't really bother me when comign from a pc. Mostly because I have headphones on. The HAF 912 is at a good price and has great cable management. So airflow should be great.

not enough funds to run ultra. save for a while, otherwise whats going to happen is you build a PC with your budget and then next year when a new game is out your PC wont be up to spec. simple equation is

more you spend on top components. = more future proof PC is
