They are the sprouts of the ostrich fern. You clean them really well, then boil. Serve with butter, salt, pepper, and vinegar or lemon juice. So good. I was never out of Croxteth Park and it's surrounding woodland, especially during school Summer holidays. Running across the bull fields/enclosures used to be funny - and scary as fuck.
