I was thinking about putting the 'new' HDD in then taking it to where I got it so they can put xp on it. Should be cheap, right?

I doubt they sell Windows XP since it's outdated by Vista, Windows 7 and now Windows 8.

The old hard drive might have still been kosher tbh, unsure why I suggested you go straight for a new hard drive. Brain fart maybe?

Go round to a buddy's house and do what I said here.

You want to get files off it?

Make a Ubuntu live usb.

Get the Ubuntu ISO from here- http://www.ubuntu.com/

Get unetbootin from here - http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/

Make a USB flash drive a ubuntu live usb (it's reversable afterwards dont worry) with unetbootin. Its easy to do, then plug the USB into your laptop and on bootup when the OEM logo shows look for "Select device to boot from" or s/t like that. Press the button it says and select "Boot from USB". When it does that, select "Run Live CD" after it has loaded. Then use the file browser to try reclaim your porn. If it aint there that hard drive is dead pretty much and your files, short of being sent off for hundreds of dollar costing recovery are gone.

A new hard drive is cheap though.

well I've got a deal lined up for a HP DV5000 with a 1.8ghz celeron, 3gb of ram 160gb hdd and windows 7 ultimate

seem like a decent laptop?

Depends on price. 160GB HDD will work depends on what all you need for space Windows 7 only requires at most 20GB, I don't know anything about the celeron processor but 1.8ghz seems pretty obsolete. The OS you have is great I prefer Ultimate because of BitLocker and a few other features, the 3GB RAM is pretty average nowadays for laptops.

In my opinion I'd say the price is a bit high but still reasonable, I personally save some more and buy a newer model (not necessarily new). But that also depends on what you want to do with it. If all you do is browse the internet then I'd say that laptop would be fine.

I have a dv6 and I wouldn't buy it today. Got it very cheap over a year ago, 8gb RAM, i7, it's pretty sweet... but it's an HP, if I dare to run anything that might bother the graphics card, this machine turns into a frying pan.

Don't buy HP laptops.
