Gentlemen, task 23 may have been completed. Im putting it up for comments before awarding the points,

Grand Theft Auto V, Rockstar North's latest addition to the ever successful, popular, legendary and infamous series heavily known across the globe as Grand Theft Auto is well under a month away... but before we get our hands on what is sure to be a magnificent piece of art, I would like to go back nearly a decade to compare and contrast Rockstar Norths' latest attempt at reimagining southern California with Rockstar Norths' first attempt at reimagining So Cal. 2004's Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and show just how far the series has come.

Let's start by comparing the scale of this behemoth of a game (Grand Theft Auto V) to the behemoth of it's time (respecfully) Grand Theft Auto San Andreas because let's be honest, we all know that size really does matter. Map size hasn't really been R* Norths' primary drive when it came to creating game worlds, which is quite hard to believe considering how big Grand Theft Auto San Andreas was compared to the other open-world sandbox games of it's time, but that hasn't really stopped them from continuing to build massive detailed game worlds like Grand Theft Auto V's. Though Grand Theft Auto V comes two cities short of Grand Theft Auto San Anderas it still promises to keep players satisfied with an abundance of city area to play with via the Grand Theft Auto equivalent of Los Angeles, California, Los Santos. Los Santos was also featured in Grand Theft Auto San Andreas but was only one of three small cities that quite honestly, because of it's size and the limited hardware of current day consoles didn't do it's real life counterpart justice with the overal square miles summing up to be less than a 10th of that of Los Angeles.

Well it is a new day and a better generation of hardware and R* North plans to take full advantage, righting the wrong injustice that may have left many residents of Los Angeles California with a bad taste in their mouth.

The Art Director of Grand Theft Auto V, Aaron Garbuthad filled us in on the creative process of Grand Theft Auto V via an interview with Buzzfeed and had this to say:

"Our process has been to block the world in quickly and then collate our reference and build out each part till we hit a good visual bar and a reasonable level of solidity. This is probably where in the past we would have stopped and finished off. Instead, we have done pass after pass of refinement for all sorts of reasons. Simply, does it look good enough? Does it play well enough? Does it feel distinctive? Does it sit well with its surroundings? Does it get across the character of the area we’re trying to create? How does it sit in terms of vistas and general sculptural composition? Do we need more color, contrast, branding, or lighting? Does it feel weathered? Does it have a sense of place and history? Can we layer story over it, whether through ambient, “generalized story” (who lives here, what have they done to the place, who lived here before them, where do they shop, what do they do for fun, do they keep their garden nice, do they have a fetish for gnomes and pink flamingos?)...

...or whether it’s layering our actual story over it: mission detailing, filling out areas that belong to characters, random events or beats, and random characters you might meet. We take all the elements the story and mission guys add and layer more detail over the world based on it."

This level of commitment and effort is just one of the many things that was just not possible to do in Grand Theft Auto San Andreas due to current gen limitations. You can be sure the same will ring true for the countryside of Grand Theft Auto V's map also known as "Blaine County".

Blain County is an extended reimagined version of all things So Cal. Moutains, forest, small towns you name it, all can be found in Blain County. But new to Grand Theft Auto V is the inclusion of wildlife. Cougars, deer, squirrel even, can all be found moving about in the world of Blain County. The inclusion of animals is sure to bring Grand Theft Auto V's countryside to life and keep it from seeming completely bland and lifeless at times which is something Grand Theft Auto San Andreas seemed to struggle with. Every living creature is said to be apart of a balanced ecosystem that will surely bring the world of Blain County and Grand Theft Auto V in general to life... but hold on! Wildelife isn't the only thing bringing Grand Theft Auto V to life...

Unlike the world of Grand Theft Auto San Andreas, Grand Theft Auto V will feature stranger missions and random pedestrian interactions. That's right, no need to reread, what was once just playthings to be beheaded or background decorations in the world of Grand Theft Auto San Andreas has now become people to meet, know, and love. Characters scattered across the map to continue the theme of a living breathing world. Who knows whom you'll see cruising down the streets of Los Santos?

(CJ cameo anyone? )

One thing that stands out when talking about Grand Theft Auto San Andreas is the in depth customization, which is something that Grand Theft Auto V will also feature come September 17.

Like Grand Theft Auto San Andreas, Grand Theft Auto V will have an abundance of customization options for your character and there accessories. Cars, boats, planes, bikes weapons, you name it can all be customized to have your deepest desires come to life... well.. virtual life anyway.

Grand Theft Auto San Andreas was pretty hefty in the customization department aswell, allowing players to customize a few vehicles and Grand Theft Auto San Andreas protagonist Carl Johnson. The vehicle customization consisted of a few bumpers, rims, spoilers, and paint jobs, far less than that of Grand Theft Auto V which features over 1000 customization options in total. Character clothing options are pretty balanced between the two based on what we've seen so far, there just simply isn't enough info yet to know which of the two has more options or the quality and diversity of the options. Cosmetic customization isn't the only customization in Grand Theft Auto San Andreas and Grand Theft Auto V, both Grand Theft Auto V and San Andreas have rpg like customization elements that allow you to tweak character attributes depending on your style of play. Stamina, Shooting, Driving, Stealth, Lung Capacity and Flying are all atributes in both Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto San Andreas that really gives each player a different experience when it comes to their protagonist that adds a sense of ownership so to speak that adds a great deal to the customization aspect of each game.

A look at the attributes

Stamina: Stamina dictates how long you can sprint depending on your attribute level.

Shooting/Weapon Skill: Tere's no info on what this skill means exactly in Grand Theft Auto V but I believe it is safe to assume it will control the accuracy of your fire arm like in Grand Theft Auto San Andreas.

Driving: Like shooting, your driving skill dictates how difficult/easy driving will be.

Stealth: Your Stealth level in Grand Theft Auto San Andreas decided just how easy it was to hide and remain out of sight, I think it is safe to assume it will do the same in Grand Theft Auto V.

Lung Capacity: Decides how long you can stay underwater without scuba equipment. (scuba equipment is exclusive to Grand Theft Auto V)

Flying: Your flying attribute works in the same way for aircraft as your driving attribute does for cars.

Though this is quite an impressive list of attributes in itself, these aren't the only attributes in Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto San Andreas. Both Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto San Andreas feature skills and attributes exclusive to their game.

Grand Theft Auto V will have Strength and Mechanic skill new to the Grand Theft Auto series which is sure to be welcomed additions to the series.

Skills such as Hitman and Gangster are a thing of the past, and attributes like respect have gone along with them. All of which are open to returning in the future.

All of this talk of skillsets and attributes bring me to perhaps the most important part of Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto San Andreas...

~ The Gameplay ~

Ahh the gameplay, memories of exploding cars and pissed off pigs. My have we come a long way. Grand Theft Auto San Andreas was a big leap in terms of gameplay from it's predecessor "Grand Theft Auto Vice City". With the addition of BMX bikes, underwater mechanics, swimming in general, or aircraft came a brand new way to play the game. Gameplay elements of old such as shooting, driving, running and even jumping was improved upon from past titles. With the addition of the vaulting ability which allowed players to jump over small walls and onto rooftops. Driving became slicker and sightly more realistic whilst shooting and melee combat was made to be far more responsive and fun. Then here we are, several Grand Theft Auto titles later with Grand Theft Auto V. Grand Theft auto V has made some tremendous improvements in the 9 years Rockstar North has had to create the game. In the past the team over at Rockstar North took on a more cartoonish, outlandish approach to their Grand Theft Auto series i.e. jetpacks and dildo weapons, but with the introduction of the Rockstar Advanced Gaming Engine (RAGE) Rockstar North has decided to take a more realistic and believable approach to their Grand Theft Auto games. Starting with "Grand Theft Auto IV". Grand Theft Auto IV had a realistic tone to the story that often carried over to the gameplay, getting rid of beloved activities and features such as parachuting, car customization, business ownership and more. The exclusion of said activities caused an outroar from fans stating that there was "nothing to do" or "Grand Theft Auto IV is boring". Rockstar North heard their cries and has since been working hard to bring back the fun to Grand Theft Auto V that was present in Grand Theft Auto San Andres. Rockstar promises that the gameplay won't be as slow or boring as it was in Grand Theft Auto IV but rather fast paced, action-packed and exciting. to help create this feeling the team over at Rockstar North decided to add a score to Grand That Auto V, something that was absent in Grand Theft Auto San Andreas and overall is completely new to the series.

When asked about the musical score and what it did for gameplay, Dan Houser said this:

"We saw it in both Red Dead [Redemption] and Max [Payne 3]. When you put scores into missions, it brought them to life. It was doing a lot of work that nothing was doing in Grand Theft Auto. It adds something. We felt that as long as we kept the radios there as well, we wouldn't necessarily lose anything."

Quote curtesy of Imagine Games Network (IGN)

This is a prime example of experience taking effect. Rockstar has had the time to play a little game of "trial & error" through though their other titles such as 2010's Game of The Year "Red Dead Redemption", and last years 2012 hit, Max Payne 3 as Mr. Houser so elegantly mentioned. It is very unlikely that after all of these years Rockstar North hasn't gotten even more experienced with making Grand Theft Auto titles and in turn will not make a fluent and fun gameplay experience that will surpass that of Grand Theft Auto San Andreas. Expect the driving, shooting, flying, biking and swimming to blow Grand Theft Auto San Andreas' out of the water, much in the same way Grand Theft Auto San Andreas did to Grand Theft Auto III back in 2004 only it'll be far better due to Grand Theft Auto V's six year advantage.

However there is one other thing that may just be the biggest difference between Grand Theft Auto V and not just Grand Theft Auto San Andreas but any Grand Theft Auto title to date...

~ ProtagonistS ~

Perhaps the biggest difference between Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto San Andreas' gameplay is the use of three separate protagonist vs. the use of only one. The use of three separate protagonist and the way that Rockstar North is handling it depending on your personal preferences comes with a lot of pros and cons... but mostly pros. During missions, players will be able to switch between the three protagonist at almost any time to keep the action going and skip pass the dull moments that plagued countless missions in Grand Theft Auto San Andreas. When in free-roam players will also be able to switch between the games three main characters Micheal, "a once successful bank robber and now less successful family man", Franklin, "a humble street hussler convinced he is surrounded by morons." and Trevor, apparently "the less said about him the better", at almost any point in the game. When not be controlled by the player these three protagonist will go about their day like regular people and do various activities on their own, which helps give each of them their own personalities and characteristics, something that could not be done in Grand Theft Auto San Andreas due to the games one protagonist Carl "CJ" Johnson. Though CJ was beloved by most, not all where happy with CJ as their protagonist due to his personality and surroundings. With three protagonist players will actually have a choice of who to spend most if not all of their free time exploring the beautiful area of Los Santos and Blaine County with. All three protagonist will have different surroundings, friends, enemies activities and problems. Which ever ones interest you the most is up to you. Whether or not the choice of having three protagonist rather than one like in Grand Theft Auto SA is a good one us unknown. We will have to wait and see because only time will tell and right now time is 25 days 23 hours 20 minutes.

Till' then here is another quote from Dan Houser on the decision:

"The characters are all there and you join them for a bit and see what they do. Then you cut to someone else. That's going to feel amazing, unlike anything anyone's seen before."

Sure three protagonist is great and all, but what's the point if you can't use all three? But wait you can... and in a way that's not too foreign to the likes of Grand Theft Auto San Andreas...

~ Mo Money Mo Progress ~

Remember that one robbery mission in Grand Theft Auto San Andreas that required you to do a lot of planning and preparation through a sequence of small missions and cutcenes? That's back in Grand Theft Auto V and this time around it's better than ever. Players will have the freedom of choice this time around that allows them to plan out the heist themselves. You'll be able to decide how you go in when you go in and how you'll escape. Much like the Caliuga Casino Robery mission in Grand theft auto San andreas the actual heist are more like side missions and won't be part of the main story. I for one think that is a smart move, it gives the player more to do besides the main missions and regular activities such as golf (new to Grand Theft Auto V), tennis (also new to Grand Theft Auto V) and alike. It gives you complete

control of how you'll execute these awesome heist which means loads of replay value and hours of gaming. Something Grand Theft Auto San Andreas could not match. The heist may not even be the best part of all of this choice and freedom, what you can do with the money is where the real fun comes in. Grand Theft Auto San Andreas had enough side activities and missions to allow you to become a multi millionaire, but due to the lack of stuff to spend it all on, making money in Grand Theft Auto San Andreas now matter how you did it became a drag and somewhat insignificant. Rockstar North are striving to make sure that does not happen with Grand Theft Auto V thru the multiple customization options mentioned earlier and the brand new game world economy implemented into the game. With this economy you can go online and buy shares in stock or even entire businesses but it doesn't stop there.

Here's a quote I find rather interesting and very exciting from a C V G interview with Rockstar North president Leslie Benzies on Grand Theft Auto Online filling us in on just how connected and alive the in game economy is:

"Yeah. You can go online, buy some shares in a car company, target that company's cars, blow them up so the insurance will replace them and the stock price will go up. Everything's tied in, the same as it is in single-player."

2843

This is a great example of how Grand Theft Auto V's in world economy is attached to almost every part of the game, not only will gaining money from businesses be possible like it was in Grand Theft Auto San Andreas, but losing the money is very well possible as well.

In that quote, Leslie mentions that we will be able to have businesses online and in the full interview explains that mostly everything you've just read about in Grand Theft auto San Andreas is possible in Grand Theft Auto Online. GTA SA lacked an online mode at launch but it just seems like ye another thing these two have in common because GTAO won't launch until October 1st, 2013.

Well there you have it, GTA SA may be old but it is still a great game that helped mold and pave the way for GTA V. I believe GTA V has a great chance at dethrowning the king of GTA GTA SA but imo, It'll never take it's place in history.

Since the mods wont moderate this topic, minus 10 pts for the both of you <_<

I thought you were "the sole judge of the contest"

Asking other competitors is pointless, they're understandably bias.

If you find the essay is plagiarized, then thats objective proof that the essay doesnt qualify.

Dock one point for every spelling mistake. Not a bad effort, but it needs a stronger, more unified voice of the writer, rather than a jumbled assortment of paragraphs. Just needs a good editor to help tidy up spelling, use consistent terms, and help clarify the writer's POV.

On the other hand, who cares, it's better than Brian's entry. :o

Everything that isn't mine is within quotes. I understand what you're saying Qd, but tbh I'm a bit offended. I stayed up all night writing that essay.
