Review The Last Thing You Watched

Recommended Posts

Qd, I took your recommendation and watched "John Dies in the End." Got a big kick out of it. And I totally agree with your 8/10 rating. Good fun. If you want to see the director's earlier films, check out "Phantasm." Great 80's horror. There's a second and third film in the series which aren't as good as the original, but have their charm.

I just finished watching "The Incredible Burt Wonderstone," and was pleasantly surprised. Steve Carell, Steve Buscemi, and Jim Carrey star in this sleeper comedy about magicians. The Steves are the classic magician types over Las Vegas, and Jim a Criss Angel. A magicians war ensues. Tis movie marks the first time in a decade that Jim Carrey has made me laugh.

I'm a huge pussy. This movie makes me cry like a baby every time. Why doe a movie about aliens make me cry? Because I'm a huge pussy.

The genius of the director to juxtapose the beautiful kiss and the violent face stomp, completely dissecting the scene into two extremities! And even going as far as to do the face stomp in the exact same place as the kiss. The light dimming when he kissed her, causing us to question whether the kiss was an abstract of his mind, separate from reality. The scene itself represents a microcosm of the entire movie; highlighting the two conflicting personas of the protagonist. Thus further questioning whether he was an unlikely hero or simply psychotic. And not a single goddamn word was spoken! THAT, is the beauty of cinematography.

But it's ruined by the fact that his character is just some guy with Asperger syndrome.

Side note: Asperger syndrome isn't a real disorder. It's just something neckbeards use as an excuse for being weird and awkward.

i thought drive was boring... i don't get why so many people liked it, i thought it sucked... and speaking of ryan gosling...

he's only popular because women gaga over him... he's a statue in all of his movies, a horrible actor...

he only said like 10 words throughout the entire movie... the elevator scene didn't make any sense within the context of the movie... where was the driving? he drove in the opening scene and i think that was it...

I like Ryan for his performances in Lars and the Real Girl and The Believer. Lars has him as a neurotic anti-social odd ball who forms a relationship with a sex doll when his brothers wife prepares to have a baby. Reminds me of me. The Believer is his best work imo. He plays a charasmatic neo-nazi punk that's actually Jewish. It's based on a true story to make the whole thing more fun.

I did like Driver, but I went in with no expectations, only having heard there was actual stunt driving in it.

I'm currently on season 4 of Mad Men. Great series so far.

GOOD

Superb acting

Very well and cleverly written

Accurately depicts 1960s New York better than any show or movie I have ever seen.

BAD

Drags at times, can get boring for stretches during an episode.

OVERALL SCORE- 8.5/10

I also started watching the new season of Arrested Development and I don't understand why that show ever got cancelled. It's a bit confusing to keep up though, since they're showing how the past couple of years have been for the different characters. I recently got to watch Tobias's last couple of years and his ANUSTART! He's probably my favorite character in the show.

Sadly, it never got good ratings. Still one of the best and smartly written comedies ever on TV.

The World's End

Considered the final part to the "Cornetto Trilogy" with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. This story takes more sci-fi into the real world, and creates a Doctor Who fan's wet dream. The story is simple, but effective, and appeals to fans of past films from this funny duo. There is plenty of Easter Eggs and guest appearances, for those of you that remember Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz well. The structure follows suit, which carries the iconic trilogy - relatable characters, comical humor with a melancholy undertone, with an eventual purpose to ensue.

If you enjoyed the other films, you're pretty much guaranteed to like this one too.

Armando Ianucci's 2009 film, In The Loop, the film adaptation of his TV show, The Thick of It. To watch a complex political environment spiral into a catastro-fuck as sex, hate, fate, human error, and just plain human nature all get in the way -- that's bound to be quality entertainment. Great performances from the hilarious Peter Capaldi and the late James Gandolfini tie the film together seamlessly. A stellar plot complemented by stellar execution and script delivery, and a raucously funny time. Watch it if you haven't already.

Special thanks to the one and only Firm for the recommendation.

Films i watched last night.

How I Spent My Summer Vacation / Get The Gringo. (2012)

For some reason this has two names, in the UK it's known as the first. Staring Mel Gibson, primarily set in a Mexican prison where Gibson's character (Only known by Driver, as he never actually gives his real name) gets sent after crossing the border from America in good fashion. The prison is like a small town, shops, tattooist, even somewhere to get your fix. Inside, the warden/guards have little say, but to keep prisoners inside the gate. The place is run by some big time Mexican "business man", and his family. Driver has to fight for survival by using his skills/tricks he used in the outside world. He meets a kid, who for some reason the Big time Mexicans protect.

Anyway, not to give anything away. . . . at all. Shit kicks off, money, firefights, with a few grenades chucked in for good measure are included. I was happily surprised as I wasn't expecting a lot from this film.

I know this isn't exactly a newish release, but I've only just got round to watching it. For whose of you who haven't watched it, kid wants to get into Havard, but needs the scholarship that only 1 in 300 or so accepted applicants get, and the year's before grantee was a one-legged Korean. But this kid doesn't stand out like in anyway, and without the scholarship, it'll cost him over 300,000.00 to be able to go to Havard. So when an opportunity arises to earn that money, by counting cards in Vegas, he eventually grabs the chance to go. With casino security watching closely, if you don't get out a the right time, you're gonna get fucked up.

The whole thing for me, was predictable from the start, even the twist at the end. So It was an okay film, nothing special, i'd say, watch it once, if you're bored, and there's nothing better to do.

5/10

Wonder Boy (2010)

This surprised me as it was pretty good for an independent film, which you do have to take into consideration when watching any indy film, they don't have the vast amounts of cash to spend on the film and post production like the big companies do.

The protagonist (sean) sees his mum murdered as a kid, he grows up to be a bookworm, getting straight A's in school and not really having any friends, always being haunted by his memories of that night as a kid. But he also spends his free time down the local boxing club, running, and looking at mugshots at the local precinct where he got taken after the murder. The story leads from there, and when a newly promoted Latino female detective (she's hot ;) ) comes to the precinct, their lives cross paths, when a string of murders against low lifes of society happens, with her leading to believe he maybe involved.

Just watched the movie Chinatown with Jack Nicholson on Netflix. I heard that it's a classic and an amazing movie so I decided to check it out. Long story short, I was quite disappointed.

Pros

-Very well acted, especially by Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway

-The well thought out plot twists near the end kept me on the edge of my seat.

Cons

-Much too long, dragged for stretches near the middle

-The ending was pure fuck and left much to be desired. It seemed like a cliffhanger at the end of a TV show's season.

Score with a descent ending- 8/10

Score with the current ending- 5.5/10

This film would have been an OK way to spend an evening with nothing to do if the expectations weren't so damn high and it wasn't so time consuming.
